Smith survived a primary challenge from his former ally, Governor Roosevelt. On the Republican side, a wide-open contest for the nomination results in progressive standard-bearer Senator Borah prevailing over the more conservative Senator Curtis. To balance the ticket, Curtis was selected as the running mate.

Smith has faced criticism for his handling of the Bonus Army as well as his alleged neglect of the Dust Bowl.

At the time I think I would have voted for Borah because of the bad economy. So Borah I guess.

You're telling me, Smith the WET, would be Herbert Hoover? I'm not buying it.

But if this is what it looks like, then Thomas it is,...I'm not voting for Herbert Hoover, and I'm not putting Charles Curtis close to the presidency. If Borah wins and pulls an FDR, then maybe I'll cross the line.

But not now.

Horrible Options, Borah/Curtis, I guess.

Run-off then?

Still voting Smith if that happens. Enticing as Borah sounds, he's still of the party of economic stupidity and "bootstraps" and it's been that way since Hayes. Only Cleveland and Parker have been extreme enough to make me vote GOP since then.

No, Atlas has a well-known liberal bias, and thus the Republican candidate gets a decent handicap in post-1928 elections; enough to ensure a comfortable Borah win in this election if the results stay the same, not necessarily enough to guarantee he won't be crushed by FDR in four years.
