I think the US will honor its word to Taiwan and come to its aid whenever China decides it's time for them to invade.

If the US plays it right they also might be able to rid China of Communism and then get a real Capitolist system put in, finally freeing China politically and socially!

Nope.  It is impossible I'm afraid.  If nuclear missiles had been placed there in the early sixties, before the Chinese had theirs (I think they got theirs in the late sixties?),  then I think the deterrent would have worked.  But since we didn't give them nukes, the Taiwanese are doomed.

The Taiwanese are doomed or you'll doom the Taiwanese?

I have nothing to do with it.  They're doomed to be ruled over by the tyrants in Peking one day.

Unless the Taiwanese give the Chinese a real provocation beyond  trying to make the de facto seperation a de jure one, we will come to Taiwan’s aid if they request it.  The question is, would the Taiwanese request it?  They may decide that it is better to not fight the war and try to change China from within.  Even a victory for Taiwan is likely to be costly and if internal Chinese reform appears feasible, they might decide to try that instead.

Yes, unless we have a weak willed President (Carter or Clinton-esque type), in which case we won't.  Either way, China has nothing to gain in attacking Taiwan and Taiwan has nothing to gain by provoking China. Whether either country will provoke the other is debateble.

Not on land, certainly, but we will certainly destroy the Chinese Navy and Air Force.

And if we have control of sea and land, there's no way the Reds can take Taiwan.  And if they land troops there...they die.  We can take on any conventional army in the world...and the Red Army, in Taiwan, will have no choice but to fight conventionally (as they're in enemy territory).

And if the Chinese lose the air war, the naval war, and their troops on Taiwan get pushed back into the Strait of Formosa...then I don't think the Communists would be able to stay in power.

But the Reds know this, so unless they completely paint themselves into a corner, it won't happen.

And if for some reason it goes nuclear, they only have 20 nukes than can hit us, of which many will malfunction and we'll shoot down a couple.  So it isn't doomsday.  Not that it would be nice, of course.  And the economic consequences, nukes or no nukes, would be devastating.

Maybe. We need to incite some sort of border war between China and India, for example, and secretly fund secesssionist movements, along with creating a large espionage network, and if that happens, we will probably go to war with China, but if the Chinese are monitoring us, very few would consider an invasion.
