Of what's formally considered Literature, he probably is my favorite American author as well, alongside Hunter S. and Salinger, of course.

Steinbeck is a huge FF. I love how he explores the relationship, the dependency, of humans to the environment - Grapes, The Pearl, and others I'm not immediately recalling. His style is of course very readable and almost conversational. He paints a visual image with words extremely well.

Tortilla Flats is my second favorite of his behind Of Mice and Men, which is my favorite piece of literature.  I like the shorter ones better I think.  tGoW is obviously important, but I think I liked The Winter of Our Discontent better, or at least found it less depressing.  I haven't read (or possibly just don't remember reading) East of Eden, but I've read all the other "important" stuff.  Travels with Charley is my current toilet reading at home.
