There is no doubt that Susan Collins will win this year. Mainers love her, and she defines New England Republican. But, of course, she is ticking into her 60's now. She can't serve that many more terms. But how many? Will this be her last term? Or will she seek one or two more?
Same applies to King. Mainers LOVE him. But he is even older than Collins. Will he run for reelection in 2018 at all, or retire?

I think both of them will serve one more (not including 2014 for Collins). Though Angus King is old, he seems to be enjoying his job.

So retire after 2020 or run again? Sorry, worded weirdly.

My hope is that Hillary Clinton will become President, and talk Senator Collins into accepting Secretary of Transportation or something. Then we can get somebody like Emily Cain in the seat.

Neither is gonna happen. Sorry. Hillary, even if she does run, is a paper tiger.

King is quite old for a freshman Senator (taking office at age of 69), so the conventional wisdom would suggest he won't serve long (one more term at most).

Though, guys holding safe seats loves to stay until they are in their 90s.

The GOP field must be paper deer then.

Hillary Clinton isn't going to appoint Senator Collins to her cabinet, lets put that to rest right now.

Collins will retire in 2020, and King in 2024, if I had to bet.

You're too sure of yourself.

The fact is, Clinton wouldn't want to give Collins a major cabinet post (one of the Big 4), and Collins won't accept unless she is offered one of the Big 4 (even then it's not a given).

If Angus King retires in 2018 or decides to caucus with the GOP expect hopefully Governor Michaud to challenge King or run in an open race assuming Michaud is popular.

Collins struck me as a "Senator for Life" type.

She's actually relatively young for her level of seniority, and she represents the GOP's best candidate for first female PPT if Roberts and Sessions step aside or lose in 2020 or 2026.

King's political future is much more fragile.  If he senses a major challenge from the left, I bet he retires in 2018.  The fact that he endorsed Collins shows that's he's not completely immune from Democratic backlash.

I like Michaud but he is only good for two terms. If the voters in Maine want someone who can build seniority I think they'd be better with Emily Cain

Yes. I am very sure of myself in the sense that I know that cabinets do not fully consist of Senators and Governors. Sylvia Burwell, Sally Jewell, Shaun Donovan, Jack Lew, Thomas Perez, Penny Pritzker, Ernest Moniz, Arne Duncan, Jeh Johnson, and Sammantha Powers would agree.....

I'd rather have Bellows take a swing some time in the future . Cain is too corporate for my tastes.

I honestly can only see her being appointed as Secretary of the Treasury, and even then I don't see them agreeing on fiscal policy.

I think she could get a nom for Commerce, but she's not giving up a safe seat for that.

Y'know, I don't think Michaud is gonna win. LePage's popularity in Upper Maine, an unpolled area, can't be underestimated, and he is surging in polls anyway.

What a well thought out, reasoned response to my critique of your uninformed speculation! Kudos!

Michaud is basically a perfect candidate for northern Maine- a vaguely Socon, popular rep from the area.
