Horrible politics and environmental problems, but otherwise kind of intriguing. Perhaps the most noteworthy thing about it though is being home to the Baikonur Cosmodrome - the site at which humanity first became a space-faring species. It was the first spaceport ever built by humanity and launched from its pads the first: functional ICBM, artificial satellite, spacecraft conducting scientific experiments, spacecraft delivering an animal - then man and later woman - into Earth orbit, spacecraft to leave Earth orbit, spacecraft to orbit around the sun, manufactured object to arrive on the surface of another celestial body, space station, etc. It is definitely not a freedom country right now but describing it as horrible overall seems needlessly harsh and lopsided.
