No clue; while I do think there's a cultural divide between the South/Plains/Interior West and the rest of the country, I don't think it's as much as people think.  If you look at the results of the 2012 presidential election, for example, it suggests this, but if you look at the map of governors by party, the picture gets a little more blurry.  Since the 2000 election was really the first time we saw much talk of a "culture war," I think it's only fair that we go through the maps of governors by party in each of those elections (using Atlas colors, of course):
2000

2004

2008

2012

These maps certainly doesn't suggest much of a culture war, even if the presidential election maps do.

On the other hand, I have no idea about Germany.

US, by far.

@Cathcon: using party labels (and those of Governors, in particular) is pretty much missing the point.

Why does everyone do this? Me and Inks were never routinely mixed up to my knowledge.

Because we're both Republicans from Michigan and like oldies music (granted, you gravitate more to classic rock, while I'm more of an all-of-the-above: rockabilly, doo-wop, surf rock, psychedelic rock, classic rock, disco, power ballads, etc.  Of course there's a lot of overlap there.)

The German divide is not really cultural. It's more about economy and previous political institutions. When it comes to cultural things the divide in Germany is more North/South, I believe.

My first thought, too, until I remembered Iraq, the Phillipines, South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana, Indonesia...

The Gallup map on religious importance per state shows a huge cultural divide.
