I've been a nacho cheese loyalist since 15 years ago.  never liked cool ranch.  Taco Bell just debuted a cool ranch locos taco.

the third party flavors tend to be gimmicks like this:

was one of the strangest marketing campaigns in recent memory.  the consumer was encouraged to purchase both the 'Burn' chips along with the Pepsi Max Cease Fire.  so you'd set your mouth aflame with the scalding chips and cool the burn with the cease fire.  and get mad hopped up on caffeine while you were at it, to the tune of 125mg/20oz.

I know all this because this marketing campaign occurred in spring of 2010, and Cornell has an incestuous marketing partnership with PepsiCo (the main lecture hall in the building I spent most of my class time while at Cornell, Ives Hall, is adorned 'the PepsiCo Lecture Hall' - no joke).  my buddy at the time had a virtually unlimited supply of credits for use at campus food and market outlets, which we used on snacks and sodas for mixers.  Pepsi Max and tequila or Rum was a staple.  we, of course, noticed when 'Cease Fire' made its ephemeral appearance on the shelves.

it's long been understood that television, and probably the mass-market internet, is designed to convince the viewer that he is impossibly flawed, and then the advertisements sell products that cure the supposed flaw.  see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_Arguments_for_the_Elimination_of_Television .  the strange thing about the cease fire campaign is that the product was marketed explicitly to cure the problem you acquired with your purchase of the Doritos product.  all in condescending jest, I suppose, as a great degree of advertising is nowadays, but still strange and without an obvious comparable phenomenon.

Cooler Ranch

I was very upset when Doritos stopped using comparative forms.

I didn't realize that's what they were doing.  I was thinking of it the other day and came to the hazy conclusion that 'nacho cheesier' was French.

I like them both, and I'm pretty ambivalent.

On a related note: any of you guys remember that Super Bowl commercial that got banned where a church was trying to bring more people in by using Doritos and Pepsi Max for communion?

Spicy Sweet Chili are great.  Also, they used to have a flavor called Midnight Cheeseburger or something like that, and it was absolutely amazing.

I only eat the Spicy Nacho ones. The others are so much less fantastic. Cool Ranch is pretty bangin though.

Regular nacho cheese Doritos are the best.  Though dipping nacho cheese Doritos in nacho cheese is artery clogging amazing.

Cool Ranch - Ever since the first one came out, I've been complaining they should get a Cool Ranch taco at Taco Bell...needless to say, I was thrilled when I found out not too long ago. Wink

you meant Tabasco dude.  you had me scratching my head for a moment.  and had my mother wondering why I was Googling 'Cheez-it tobacco' when she walked past.

Terrible food, but great thread idea.  Wasteland and all.

While I dislike this type of food and almost never eat it (and almost never ate it even when in the Bad Place), I would strongly prefer the 'original' or 'standard' flavor of such things.  Any innovations are always deleterious.

My stomach hasn't handled Doritos well since a childhood incident in which I ate an entire bag and vomited it up in the loft of a barn on the dairy farm that one of my friends lived on.

For the past several years, this has been my salty snack of choice:

Those are amazing... Almost glad I can't get them here.
