I can see a requirement to allow unpaid sick days.

Because we don't want sickly people priced out of jobs?

Think about it.  If you are an employer who has two equally competent people available to do a job, of whom one you think is likely to take paid sick days while the other likely won't, who are you going to hire?  (And that's before even having to consider what having a sickly person on the payroll is likely to do to the company health insurance plan.)

I don't dispute the reasons why having paid sick leave and health insurance are good things, but forcing employers to pay for them will lead to employers discriminating against those with poor health for perfectly valid economic reasons.  If we're going to have a social safety net, we need to have society as a whole pay for it, not force employers to do so in a manner that is economically detrimental to themselves.

Might as well debate child labor while we're at it?

The question is so broadly worded I can't support it, especially as a mandate......and many employers give their full time employees sick days without a mandate anyway.

maybe I'm undecided. I suppose we could just increase the welfare/safety net so you just take a unpaid day off and it doesn't hurt you financially. Since poor people would be likely to go to work sick because they need the money.

True Federalist has made an excellent point.

Employer-paid sick days effectively results in discrimination against the unhealthy.

Well after a certain point, yes, the state welfare system should be responsible, but anyone can come down with something that prevents him from being able to work. This should be a normal occurance, without needing to be worried about losing pay (or getting fired) for missing a day.

I understand employees have few rights in the States, but the basics really do need to be covered...

Most definitely yes. Isn't the US the only OECD country without mandatory paid sick leave (let alone paid vacation, which I would also strongly support)?
