Family Guy is basically the funniest TV show ever made.

I really don't see how even somebody who likes it could in seriousness argue that.

King of the Hill rang very true to me and I've always liked it as a result.  Most of the characters reminded me of people I've known at various points, especially Khan and Minh.

There isn't any show with a higher laughs per minute rate. Maybe classic Simpsons, but The Simpsons is so terrible now the average has gone down significantly.

Futurama is probably the best animated show still making new episodes.

That's well done also.  Al Gore claimed during the 2000 campaign that it was his favorite broadcast network show.  I don't know whether that was before or after they had him in the show.  Actually it was just his head in a jar, but apparently he did his own voice.

Speaking of Ron Burgundy, I kinda like the two news talking heads on Family Guy a little better, though.  I think if they had Morbo the anchorman of √2 News and his co-anchor engage in the sexual innuendo like on Family Guy it would be a little more realistic.

King of the Hill, I don't mind a bit of Family Guy every now and then though, especially for the pop culture references.

I've never seen either.....am I missing anything?

I highly recommend watching both, especially KotH, and classic Simpsons as well if you haven't seen that.

His daughter worked (works?) on the show.

I never got king of the hill. Family Guy had its funny moments, but I don't watch either these days. The only comedies I watch are Modern Family, The League, Louie, and Tim and Eric stuff.

Archer is funny.  I think it has potential, especially in today's paranoid age.  I haven't watched it in several months, though.  Boondocks is more like surrealism, and it's far too black to be mainstream funny.  Venture Brothers is probably the best of the three, but it has too many idiots, including the protagonist.  It's a weird formula to cast the hero as a moron.

You sort of open a can of worms with your post.  Each of those fine shows deserves its own thread.  Futurama is more like the McDonald's of animated sitcoms.  Like KISS is the McDonald's of Rock'n'Roll.  Those shows you mention are excellent, and in many respects higher quality than Futurama, but they'll never have the mainstream appeal of Futurama.

and I I left Metalocolypse off the list because it had too narrow of an audience Wink

but you're right of course.  Boondocks and Ventrure Bros could never be mainstream, but the writing and voice acting are top notch, but a lot of jokes are going to fly by people that haven't been exposed to black or 70s cartoons culture.  Archer could be (and probably is) mainstream though, at least in the under 40 white adult male crowd, and really, we're the only ones that matter.

If we're talking Adult Swim, I do like the Black Dynamite cartoon (the movie is also great).

I suppose I'm the only vote for American Dad?

Family Guy is OK. It has some great moments, but other than the early series, it isn't very re-watchable. King of the Hill just isn't my kind of show.

Original Family Guy, before they canceled it the first time, was a thing of beauty.  Zombie Family Guy, when they brought it back, had a couple flashes of humor but went downhill quickly and I haven't watched it for years now.

That's more than I can say for King of the Hill, which I'd never been able to get into at all.  So FG by default, on the strength of the early stuff.  But really I watch sufficiently little TV that I'm surprised I even have that much of an opinion here.

I don't get why people complain about Family Guy "going downhill" and saying it relies too much on random jokes now, the old episodes were the EXACT SAME WAY. Hell wasn't the pilot the episode where the Kool-Aid Man breaks down the courtroom wall?

I would submit that there's a qualitative as well as quantitative aspect to humor. I can think of shows that have a higher quality of humor than Family Guy often despite being mostly-serious drama.

King of the Hill easily. Maybe you have to live in "real America" to get it. It can be subtle at times. It's much more of a show for grown ups. But a lot of the humor is pretty universal. The contrast between the overacheiving Asian Khans and the mediocre Hills is great. Hank's inability to express love for anybody except his dog. Peggy's enduring sense of self-importance. LuAnne's naivite. Dale's inability to recognize Nancy's affair with John Redcorn. Bill's utter lack of shame and his unrequited feelings for Peggy. Everybody's discomfort with Bobby's weirdness. The show is comic gold. What does Family Guy have in contrast? A bunch of disjointed pop references from 30 years ago and cut away gags. Not even a close comparison.
