Alright my liberal friends, just keep bashing President Bush... cause the new Tea Party face of the GOP is just so much more awesome.  Enjoy your happy Bush-hating lives without Medicare, Social Security, environmental protections, and  transportation infrastructure.

And the PATRIOT ACT, The Department of Education, the Federal Reserve, most states banning gay marriage....

You like Bush but also think we should get rid of those things, or you don't think that libertarianism is a major force within the TP movement?

Libertarianism is not a major force in all but the tiniest sliver of the Tea Party "movement". A devotion to radical neoliberal economics does not a libertarian movement make.

I should have said "economic libertarianism" or Darwinism.  How would you define the difference between "radical neoliberal economics" and economic libertarianism?

I hold to a very particular view of libertarianism, so I can't presume to speak even for the majority of posters who identify with that philosophy on this forum. What I can say is that this notion that a centralized corporation controlled by a centralized board of directors is any different from a centralized government controlled by a centralized political class is foolish. I oppose centralization in both political economy and the real economy, and I do not think centralization is a necessary component towards the preservation of economies of scale.

That said, I think that most posters with yellow avatars here would agree with me that the Tea Partiers only generally oppose government intervention in the economy, and then almost always only that intervention which comes from the Federal government. I doubt that one out of every ten Tea Partiers would agree with me when I say that zoning laws which are used by local governments to drive out businesses that cater to non-mainstream and nonconformist tastes are more harmful to the real economy than those few Federal regulations which have not been bent to serve the interests of those industries they are nominally meant to keep in check.

I like George W, yet disagree with nearly everything you just said

I oppose Libertarianism, but I support Ryan's medicare plan, but also supported the 2008 Bush Bank Bailouts.

I do think Libertarianism has a influential role in the TP, too much for my liking.

I wouldn't describe myself as a fan per se, but its, uh, odiousness has been greatly exaggerated.

Despise it.  It demeans America to pass laws against ourselves based on bogeyman tales.

How so?  We judge a lot of things in life relatively.  I was simply comparing the Bush GOP with the Tea Party elements of today's GOP.

Libertarianism is taking hold in a way that is a direct threat to the basic institutions that protect the less fortunate among us, workers' rights, quality of life, and the existence of the middle class.  For all his faults, President Bush did not wish to dismantle those protections.

America will regret what it is doing to itself now.. but by then it will be too late.

America isn't doing anything of that sort now. Some teabagger idiots are trying to push it but will succeed in nothing but nominating an unelectable extremist idiot in 2012, leaving Obama to veto any of their garbage, assuming it even makes it to his desk (which has yet to happen).
