Considering I'm from Long Island, probably when I was 4 or 5.....

Yeah, I played lacrosse for a few years in high school. I managed to start on defense without really even playing before then.  It wasnt as popular in Long Beach though- to me it was more of an upper middle class activity. A sport for kids from Rockville Centre and Garden City to play so they could get scholarships. A lot of my classmates and friends did go on to play at some big time programs- Duke, Notre Dame, UNC etc.

Granted its big in upper middle class Garden City and Rockville Centre, but its more than an upper middle class thing on LI, though you probably won't see much of it in some of the poorer areas.

I never played, but had a few friends that did, and even when we had some elite baseball teams (I went to Massapequa), Lacrosse was always huge here.  Granted you do have some upper middle class areas near the water, but its still primarily middle class.    Had someone on the U.S roster for the World Games last year.   Its also big in Farmingdale (who actually defeated Massapequa in the Nassau Class A Finals last year), Hicksville also has a pretty good program.

Yeah, you are right that it does drawn a greater diversity in class- and my perception was flawed.  I think it wasnt popular in LB because there weren't really any youth teams supported and in towns like RVC and GC they were playing for a long time before high school. It still is a lily white sport though.

I knew the Massapequa baseball coach years back- he coached at my high school before he went to Pequa.
