In general, an ineffective President. This doesn't mean that he was an HP, however. He was an adament supporter of civil rights and great figure of the anti-stalwart movement. He was just not the right man for the Presidency, though perhaps a better man for the job than Samuel Tilden.

In what ways? Sure he didn't get much done, but he didn't really screw up anywhere either, unlike Benjamin Harrison.

He was just not the right man for the Presidency, though perhaps a better man for the job than Samuel Tilden.

How come?

Tilden hated both the Irish, and the Blacks.

I totally agree with you. It's a huge myth that Hayes stole that election from Tilden. Hayes might have even won the popular vote had the voting been free and fair throughout all Southern states.

Proof?

Also, I know Hayes didn't hate black people, but what were his attitudes towards the Irish?

Might have?

If everyone who wanted to vote had voted, Hayes would have won big.
