Dull authoritarian sh**thole. Ranked third least free state in the nation.

Obviously horrible state.

They keep finding ways to drive people out with taxes and regulations yes. But that's not the worst.. It's the johns and gambling addicts infesting the state.

Uh, it has some of the laxest rules on strip clubs and has legal prostitution unlike 48 other states. Doesn't sound very authoritarian to me.

Wow, you're supposed to be some sort of libertarian and now you're opposing gambling and prostitution?

Supporting prostitution is not freedom.

Particularly when you consider how many of the people involved were either smuggled in illegally or don't really have the option of leaving. We're not exactly talking about call girls here. And if you think that isn't as much of a problem in countries where it's been legalized just take a look what's going on in places like Australia.

Yeah, I read that already in your OP, why are you repeating it as if it were relevant?

My view is that those issues should pretty much be left to the states, like most things. That said I never claimed to be libertarian on every issue.

BRTD, you need to remember that for most of these "libertarians", the only freedoms that matter are being able to steal (and subsequently keep) as much money as possible and being to able to own as many guns as they want. If these "freedoms" are ever curbed at all, FASCISM IS ON THE MARCH.

And that type of stuff IS illegal in Rhode Island. Call girls aren't. So yes, we are talking about that sort of thing. Brothels, pimping, etc. are all illegal. Only call girls who advertise in classifieds or escort services are not.

It is relevant as it shows areas in which the state is decidedly non-authoritarian.

But you aren't really a libertarian on anything, are you?

Not really, its position toward business in general should be considered, not just whether certain types of business are allowed to exist.

And by the way, coincidentally just last week the governor of Rhode Island signed a bill that closed any loopholes and officially outlawed prostitution. So much for that.

Keep narrowing your definition of freedom, Libertas, and eventually you'll be able to support slavery whole-hog.

So this is wrong, yet you want to ban abortion?

No need to ban anything; just need to enforce existing laws against murder.

But that's not relevant here...two adults voluntarily entering into contract to have consensual sex is not even remotely comparable.

"Liberty for all! Except for you!"

If I want to open an abortion clinic for-profit, why should Rhode Island, or any other State, be able to stop me?

That's too bad, but I bet the notorious strip club prostitution there will continue. It was illegal even before this, yet was largely unenforced. RI sounds similar to Minneapolis in this regards, while Minneapolis is pretty tough on street prostitution all other forms are basically ignored and the strip clubs are NEVER policed, to the point where a strip club exists where a stripper was willing to give me a handjob during a private dance. Without me paying anything extra. Or even requesting it. Or having seen her at any point prior to that night. Furthermore a well known brothel is open within walking distance of the main police station. And has been open for 20 years.
