What was the case of Maryland specifically? Obviously it's super blue and Biden did well in the entire Northeast, but he should really be commended for that performance there.

MD is trending blue the same way VA is, people just haven't paid as much attention to it because it was already a solid blue state.

There are generally 3 main population centers in Maryland. 

1) You have the Baltimore area which has historically been Democrat, but the suburbs are turning more Democratic.

2) You have minority areas just outside of DC, mainly Prince George's but now also growing into Anne Arundel County which have historically been Democrat but are gaining in population and shifting counties like Anne Arundel more towards Democrats.

3) You have extremely wealthy areas outside of DC, mainly heavily populated Montgomery County.  This is kind of where the movement is.  It's basically very similar to Fairfax County in Virginia.  It's filled with educated upper middle class white, asian, and other minority voters who have been trending Democratic for years.

The more rural parts of Maryland are extremely sparsely populated and some of them aren't super religious conservative in the same way that Southern Virginia is (though some are). 

So basically the three main population centers have been trending blue to varying degrees for years and there's little to nothing to offset that.

I actually think Biden exceeded expectations in a lot of states:

Colorado (+14), Minnesota (+7), New Hampshire (+7), Maine (+9), New Mexico (+11), Vermont (+35), Massachusetts (+34), Connecticut (+20), Maryland (+33), Georgia (+.3)

Alaska (-10), Louisiana (-18)

The main ones where he missed just happened to be heavily skewed toward battlegrounds:

Pennsylvania (+1), Wisconsin (+.5), Michigan (+3), Virginia (+10), Nevada (+2)

Florida (-3), Ohio (-8), Iowa (-8), Texas (-5), Montana (-16)

Remember the meeting of the three electors in Montana? Linda McCulloch the Secretary of State at the time decided she was chairwoman, and invited the members of the public to make speeches before the electors began their deliberation. A couple of old ladies spoke about Orange Man Bad and Russian Collusion. Then the Secretary of State said the electors should explain why they were voting for Trump.

Remember Larry Lessig, who had been a candidate for nomination by the Democrats, who offered to provide legal counsel to any faithless electors?

Remember the sick Trump fanatic who literally sent pipe bombs to Democratic politicians who your sick leader complained about?
