Easily one of the top cities in the world.

Slow your roll there.

Does it have nice weather?  Yes.
Is it a good tourist destination?  Yes.
Is it an amazing "city?" No.

San Diego has a ton of cool touristy stuff.  Balboa Park, Coronado Island, Torrey Pines State Park, the beaches, etc.  It also suffers from the same problems as Los Angeles in terms of being a western US car centric place.  And, clearly, it's not one of the top cities in terms of restaurants, bars, culture, museums, theater, etc.  You just have too many boring people who love surfing or golfing and then eating healthy.

All that said, I like San Diego.  But, if I lived in California, I would prefer the Bay area or Los Angeles.

Well, when you have to constantly deal with the heat, it's not very fun.  I also spent part of my early childhood in the United Kingdom, which might explain some of it.

San Diego doesn't get very hot though.  Is 75 degrees fahrenheit hot?

Doesn't San Diego have one of the best Mexican food and microbrew scenes in the country?  I mean, I don't know that they're all that great for museums or anything (and I'm sure I'd agree with you as far as it being too car-centric of course), but my impression was that food and drink was something they're really good at.

Good beer, sure.
Mexican food, sure, if you count Tijuana.  There are a few good places for mariscos.  But, generally the Baja food culture is mehh so there aren't many longstanding great Mexican outposts in San Diego.  Maybe I'm wrong, I don't spend a lot of time there.

I'm generally biased against the West Coast when it comes to food.  You can only trust the ethnic restaurants to avoid the curse of California healthy gluten-free, etc., etc. edict.  I've recently been severely disappointed with the Portland, Seattle and Los Angeles restaurant scenes too.  They all have good expensive food, but they don't have nearly the depth of good cheap and mid-price restaurants that NYC does.

Is that really as hot as it gets?

My relatives in Northern California (Sacramento, SF, and places in between) don't seem to be huge fans of either San Diego or LA.

It gets hotter and certainly does in the suburbs off the ocean.  But, that's probably the average high temperature for the summer in San Diego.
