Did being brutally beaten cause Santorum not to do oddly well in the primaries?

Santorum was the last opposition candidate to Romney. If he weren't, he would've continued to be irrelevant. I'd say the same is possible for Walker, but his chances of being a frontrunner ever would be cleared.
