Here's the most likely result that would have led to Bush/Cheney getting over 400 electoral votes:



Bush/Cheney: 402 EVs
Democrat: 136 EVs

That's a little... optomistic, shall we say.

Also, what difference does it make where Bush was in August?  Carter was well in the lead early on in the 1980 election.  Does this mean that Carter just about won the election?
