I also decided to start to make a set of data, for interest's sake, beginning with Michael Z, of posters' word counts vs. the number of posts they've made.

Here's what the graph looks like so far:

My posts seem to be of above average word count Tongue

Yes, yours was one of the outliers. Smiley

I don't think anyone's going to beat phknrocket's 17,000 unique words in less than 4,000 posts, though.  I don't know how he did it, but he's said a lot of words.

I wouldn't mind a redo, Gabu Smiley

I wonder how many times I've said 'hug' or '*hughughug*' (and variants) Cheesy (cuz IIRC the *hughughug* craze started after I first requested this)

Let's find out.

For the record, here's what the graph looks like now:

Since someone mentioned that it might be a natural log relationship, so I plotted this next graph:

I thought that this bore a striking resemblance to a parabola, so I plotted this third graph:

Make of that as you will.

(Note: It's actually ln(1 + x) and ln2(1 + x) that are being plotted, not ln(x) and ln2(x), since the former two are the ones that intersect the point (0, 0), but I was too lazy to write all of that out).

Do you know what a natural logarithm is?

If not, it would be kind of difficult to explain what's going on there.

Gabu, from that, can you determine who has the most diverse vocabulary?

Depends on what we determine to be "diverse".

If it's "sheer number of unique words", then Lewis Trondheim wins with 25,651.
If it's "largest unique-word-to-number-of-posts ratio", then Machiavelli wins with 6.67 (or Dean with 4.65 if you want to ignore Machiavelli).

You're not really missing anything; it's just speculation on what the relationship is between number of posts and number of unique words.

BT has a very small number of unique words for his total post count :S

But you are right, he is 1337. You could even say he is the 13371 (the elite one).

Eventually people are going to say all they're going to say.  For some people, that's a lot; for others, that's less so.  Because of this, after a certain threshold, you aren't going to see a large increase in the number of unique words the person has said.

We all need to stop saying the p-word so much p-pul.

"People" and "think" seem to be by far the most used words on this forum (besides words you can't live without, like "the").

Question: were a bunch of posts deleted or something?  I'm comparing the number of times StatesRights has said "Lincoln" currently with the number of times StatesRights had said "Lincoln" at the start of the thread, and the number has been cut in half.  I'm hoping that I don't have some strange bug in my program that has somehow come up since last time I put it to use.

EDIT: Actually, the number of instances of just about every word has been roughly cut in half.  Hmm... I'll have to look into this.

Well, I can't find anything wrong with the program, so I'll have to assume that a whole bunch of old posts got deleted and that we just didn't notice.

So, I've started everyone after Josh22.

I first did the newest requests.  Then, after that, I did the requests that I never did that came in November, the last time this was bumped.  Then, after those were done, I began the new newest requests.  I'm now up-to-date and am running them in the order that they're requested on this topic.

It should be noted that while migrendel's unique word count may seem low, he only had 1689 posts at the time of the analysis, putting his word-count-to-posts-made ratio at 6.05, the highest by far out of people with a significant number of posts.
