Pretty awful that everyone is dancing around criticizing Melania directly. The bar has been set so unbelievably low for her that it's difficult to comprehend. I suppose we can attribute it to a generally unshakeable tendency to patronize immigrants and women who are "brave enough" to step into the arena where it's otherwise understood that they don't belong.

But yeah, this is pretty bad for team Trump. And not only because it's filthy and dishonest, either. The media will spend the next 18 hours replaying Melania Trump juxtaposed against Michelle Obama. That is not a comparison the Trump campaign would have wanted people to make.

Well, do we know if Melania actually wrote the speech?

She previously said she did. She should still be held to some kind of standard.

Lol, the mental gymnastics an otherwise well-read or educated person has to jump through to support Trump's antics would be amusing if they weren't indicative of a scary trend towards anti-intellectualism.

It's pretty bad if you look at it as a notch in the story of the Trump family's long-term attitude towards the Obamas.

Inspired by the president's race and eager to capitalize on the pent-up bigotry of the electorate, Donald Trump, in an attempt to delegitimize Barack Obama, stokes fears by demanding to see this exotic man's birth certificate.

Four years later, after disregarding and denying the humanity of the president, Donald Trump's wife appropriates the words of the black First Lady, who many in the GOP's base believe is un-American thanks in part to the colour of her skin.

My fear is that the media will overplay this and Trump's speakers will all pivot to attacking the media for their baseless attacks on innocent Melania. There's only so much spinning the pundits can do when most of the night is taken up by a block of uninterrupted speeches. If each of those speakers plays into the theme of how the media has assaulted a beautiful immigrant woman, this episode could play out quite interestingly. Which, of course, is ridiculous. But I wouldn't be surprised if this whole thing was a ploy to try and get Trump more sympathy with "the woman vote."
