Wait, so how many affairs has she had, that we know of?  She had one with Mark Field in 2004-05 when he was an MP but she wasn't yet.  And now rumors with Kwasi Kwarteng.  Who else?

So, what you are suggesting is that Truss likes bbc, just not the BBC?

Yeah, even if it doesn't happen today or tomorrow we are being mentally prepared.

Can't imagine not being the end. Buckingham Palace almost never gives out health-updates. The fact that they did this time and that Charles and William are on their way to Balmoral says it all.

It might not happen today, but I doubt it will take weeks.

The other children are all on their way.

Huw Edwards is now on the BBC in a black suit and tie.

I doubt the BBC knows more at the moment than we know. They just do this out of precaution.

Maybe not, but there is a written procedure IIRC with 'buzzwords' that are released in statements such as the one earlier in this sort of situation.

Sure, it could be that they received a message to stand by for a major announcement.

Talk about a bad omen for Liz Truss…

I thought that Liz Truss was the bad omen.

Some people are noting that the Royal Standard (the flag flown wherever the Queen happens to be in residence) doesn't appear to be flying over Balmoral and is being mistaken for the Lion Rampant (the Royal Banner of Scotland).

Charles is at Balmoral at the moment, right? If she died the monarch is still there.

Rumours that an "announcenent" is being prepared for 1800 hours UK time.

Would make sense. By that time all of the family will be at Balmoral. I can imagine that they would like to be together once the news comes out.

18:08, nothing. Not sure what everyone's still waiting for.

Harry is still on his way.

Amazing lack of content, so much so that she kept repeating herself endlessly, even though it was not a long speech.

Well, there is not much there anyway. Don't expect any dept from Liz Truss. She is just very shallow.

As a historical curio, if the unthinkable does happen and Truss does get rolled, this will be the first ‘Year of the Three PM’s’ since 1868, where we started off with the Earl of Derby, followed up with Disraeli and ended with Gladstone in office at year end (although there were three ministries in 1886, with a brief Gladstone ministry sandwiched between two led by Lord Salisbury).

The last one also goes for 1924 with MacDonald sandwiched in between the first and second Baldwin-term.

If the Labour Party calls for a vote of no-confidence, how many conservatives will be voting for it, at this point?

I love British politics but even as a not-Brit I can almost feel the shame. This is just so painfull.

While we're doing weird chancellor statistics - the Conservatives have now had more Chancellors in 2022, than Labour have had in total since 1967.

Only one more and the Conservatives will, in12/13 years, have just as many Chancellors as the Labour Party had in it's entire history.

So Truss is throwing every single one of the Treasury-ministers under the bus to save her own skin?

Yeah, that is going to be helpfull in the long run. Liz Truss did not have many friends among the MP's to begin with, sacking the ones that actually do is not going to make her any stronger.

In 1997 the British economy was booming and the Tories still lost by historic margins.

I doubt the British people will forget what Truss has done to them.

What's the record shortest tenure ever for a PM?  Asking for a friend

George Canning with 119 days, followed by his successor Goderich with 144 days. Canning died in office, Goderich was just a miserable failure (like Truss).

In modern times (post WWII) the shortest premiership is the 363 days of Douglas Home between 1963 and 1964.

Yes, but a competent PM could slow the spread of the poison just enough to make the Tories' path back to power easier. There is a difference between 250 seats at a general and 300.

I don't know, but at least Liz Truss can claim some kind of mandate, having been elected by the party members.
A new PM has no mandate what so ever. Not from the party and not from the country.

The economy will be bad for the next year or so, maybe even longer. That will be on the Tories.

For the moment I can not see them getting anything close to 250 seats, let alone 300.

From the Guardian:
Quote
Ben Wallace has hastily cancelled an early afternoon appearance before the Commons defence committee for an urgent trip to Washington DC, prompting speculation as to the purpose of the sudden visit.

James Heappey, a deputy defence minister, said “my boss Ben Wallace is in Washington this morning” in an interview in Sky News and offered a cryptic explanation of his presence there.

The junior minister told Sky News that Wallace was going “to have the sort of conversations that … beyond belief really, the fact we are at a time when these sort of conversations are necessary”.

Immediately prior, Heappey had said that the MoD was doing “a good job keeping our nation safe at a time of incredible global insecurity” although it was unclear what he may been referring to.

Doesn't feel particularly reassuring.

Yeah. this raises some serious questions.

Okay, that might be it.

But with the situation in the Ukraine going from bad to worse on a daily basis now, who knows what is going on behind the scenes.

Government minister (Graham Stuart) now says in the Commons that this *isn’t* a confidence vote

Cowards.

They know the government does not have the votes?

Apropos of nothing - there have been three years when Britain has had more than 2 PMs in one year:

1834 - Grey, Melbourne, Wellington, Peel
1852 - Russell, Derby, Aberdeen
1868 - Derby, Disraeli, Gladstone

1827 - Liverpool, Canning, Goderich

1782 and 1783 as well. All years with 3 different PM's.

1782 - North, Rockingham, Shelbourne
1783 - Shelbourne, Portland, Pitt

Talk about a messy time in politics.

If Sunak is largely going with loyalists, like Johnson and Truss did, he is going to create a huge problem for himself.
