Given the sort of people who attend opera, yes, yes I do.

Eh, I'd go to the mat for fine arts funding (including opera, though it's not my favorite genre) and I assume I count as on the "left".  I've attended a few operas in my day.

And, yeah, it's pretty nonsensical to compare opera to golf.  Both of them are stereotypically blue-blooded activities, but only one of them is an ecological disaster, which is the real issue here.  Not that I'd ban golf, I have no particular problem with it here on the East Coast, but the idea that it's okay to build acres of thirsty turfgrass in the desert for that purpose (and, of course, that's where so many American golf courses are) is ludicrous beyond comprehension.
