According to Wikipedia, NYC is actually the northernmost outpost of humid subtropical. I feel like we get (or at least used to get) enough snow to be continental, and I grew up thinking we were continental, but guess not. Learn something new every day.
This is easily resolved by hypothesizing that we used to be continental, will be subtropical by the time I'm dead, and are in the midst of transitioning right now. (Cue Bacon King.)
