This is the Republican base we're dealing with here. How is anybody surprised? The level of unfamiliarity people in some parts of the country have with the GOP base is astounding. Some of you need to get out more.
The GOP's southern base. The GOP's northern base might be just as casually racist, but they wouldn't dream of maintaining segregated proms because they never had them in the first place and never heard of them.

The South is the GOP's base. Needless to say, there's not much need for segregated proms in suburban Cincinnati or Milwaukee.  In any case, GA Republicans think Newt Gingrich would be the best candidate for the Presidency. Why on earth would anybody expect sane positions from them?

It's not coincidence that Gingrich's primary comeback happened after he shouted down a black debate moderator for asking him questions about his questionable marital history. There were all these audience members who were interviewed afterwards and talked about how they liked that Newt "put him in his place." Something is very rotten in the state of Denmark. Very rotten, indeed.
