Democrats have much more respect for people who held elected office, so a celebrity would likely have to serve in one of the traditional stepping stones (I'd include mayor in that category) first.

Democrats have greater respect for officeholders while Republicans like political outsiders.

However, if a celebrity becomes Senator he or she could be a powerhouse in a primary.
