It would depend on whether Obama would want someone to be the 2016 frontrunner.
I would imagine that Biden would stick around until the end of the term. Otherwise, he might choose a respected elder statesman/ centrist figure guaranteed to sail through the Senate as a placeholder, while picking someone else as the running mate. In that case, he might pick Robert Gates or former Senator Byron Dorgan of North Dakota.
Obama could follow his selection of Biden by choosing someone respected who is unlikely to run in four years. Bill Nelson would make sense as it would likely help with Florida.
If Obama were to pick Mark Warner, Hillary Clinton or Andrew Cuomo, and win reelection, his choice would become the overwhelming favorite for the 2016 primary.
