A lot of Spanish-Americans, at least those in NM have been in the United States since the colonial era (New Spain) and thus have basically no links with contemporary Spain or Spanish politics. Those people are heavily Democratic, forming the core of the NM Democratic machine iirc.

Quite so. Very much 'bring out your dead' territory come election time.
