I like Weld, but by 1996 the Republican party was deteriorating, and I would find it hard to vote for one unless the Dem was awful, which Kerry wasn't.

Darn, why does Massachusetts always have to have the best Senate candidates? I mean, both of them are Amaze, but probably Kerry, since I don't want the Republicans to have another Senate seat back in 1996.
The Republican party in New England was arguably to the left of the Democrats in the Deep South. In most blue states you're generally gonna find non-objectionable Republicans if they want to go anywhere in politics.
