Let's take a look at the 1972 results. Democratic nominee, a socialist HP George McGovern lost anywhere except of the racist Solid South. Meanwhile, Massachusetts (Charles Sumner's state!) gave Richard Nixon (Lincoln's heir) his best result.

D.C. voted for McGovern, because local Blacks don't know history as well.
