Funniness best appreciated if one reads the thread from the beginning...(which is what I did)

Kirk is one of the few actual honest politicians left in Illinois. I will donate to his campaign, and I will vote for him.

Kirk in 2010!

Are you sure?  I hear he's gay.

I know the first two have already been posted, but Al's reply adds a lot of humour to it for me. There is so much subtle, restrained exasperation in that line.

Frihet- Dunno, I've never heard of him.

Copperhead- Doubt it. Have you seen his posts?

Benevolent Democracy- Hope Not! I've already taken a likening to him.

Quite Honestly, it's pretty easy to detect a Hamilton Sock. And none of the above really show many signs of him.

I don't know actually. I guess option 1 and 2. A mixture I suppose.

I don't know if it was intentional or not, but given the question...

I'd probably argue that Pim Fortuyn would fit that bill perfectly. Every article I see that mentions him treats him like essentially the Danish Pat Buchanan, when nothing could possibly be further from the truth.

Pim Fortuyn was Dutch.

I think Einzige believes he is being clever with the Germans-thing. I suspect that he either has read in some psychological mumbo-jumbo book that American culture is defined by fighting the Nazis and therefore thinks he will get sympathy on his side by portraying opponents as WWII enemies OR has read in some other psychological mumbo-jumbo book that European culture is defined and traumatized by WWII and therefore thought that I, as a European, would be hurt to my core by him bringing that up.

That line of thinking is rather common with mentally disturbed people. Sort of like when Lyndon LaRouche talked about impeaching Bush a couple of years back.

For reference:

The Daily Mirror is read by people who think they run the country, The Guardian is read by people who think they ought to run the country, The Times is read by the people who actually do run the country, the Daily Mail is read by the wives of the people who run the country, the Financial Times is read by people who own the country, The Morning Star is read by people who think the country ought to be run by another country, and The Daily Telegraph is read by people who think it is. Sun readers don't care who runs the country, as long as she's got big tits.

Poor The Independent, circulation is down and not even a mention.

lol, quite.

But the reason why it isn't on the list is pretty simple; it didn't exist at the time Yes Prime Minister was filmed.

Yeah, I found that out shortly after posting.  I haven't watched a British sitcom in a long time.

Last I remember was some old 70s-80s PBS special with a bunch of yokels in some house that I think was a boarding or bed & breakfast of some sort engaging in excessive amounts of tomfoolery.

Fawlty Towers?

does anyone even know why we have FDR on the dime in the first place?

Yes, because of the March of Dimes, as was said earlier.

It's funny because it was mentioned like two posts up with a link and the guy gave an impression of wanting to look knowledgeable.

It's hard to define exactly but it would have been a lot less fun if he had stated the reason instead of asking people if they knew.

Here's my shot at it:

"In the wake of a fourth horrific attack on Chinese schoolchildren – this time by a crazed man who on Friday beet five toddlers with a hammer, then set himself on fire with two other children in his arms – the shocked and bruised nation was of two distinctly different minds.

On the Internet and the newspapers, people agonized whether in their tightly regimented society, a boiling cauldron of change with no pressure valve was blowing its lid.
In the halls of government, however, the emphasis was on preventing the steam from escaping at all."
pardon?

I rephrased it.  I thought that's what you meant.  Did you want us to read it out loud for you?  Because if so, someone else will have to, I don't have a microphone at the moment.

How is this funny?  Huh

I may have misread it, but you posted the exact same text again, which seemed a bit cruel to the poor guy...

What a stupid poll.

Though bland generalizations are what I expect from Phknrocket1k. What else can one expect from a would-be economist?

I realized it might be necessary to point out what's funny since it took me a while, but it's the classic act of attacking generalization with a generalization.

Indeed, the establishment went down hard yesterday.

Indeed. Nothing says 'Fight the Establishment!' like the son of a Congressman celebrating his victory in a Republican primary at a golf club!

No, that was a non-issue, as I already mentioned.

Here is the mention:
