It's a fallacy to draw a simple line from "Versailles ---> Hitler". Imperial German hegemony would have been horrendous to nearly everyone who wasn't a German. Just look at the plans for Eastern Europe that Ludendorff was making. Europe did not need to be subjected to that to keep Hitler away from power.
So it was far better that Europe be subjected to Stalin? Wilson's biggest fault in my opinion was not Versailles, but that his policies caused the war to drag out and led to the Bolshevik Revolution. Also, I think it is a big mistake to think that once the war was over the militarists would have continued to get their way. There is every reason to believe that Germany would have resumed its liberalization after a victorious war.
