Coleman lost to a wrestler and a comedian and only squeaked by statewide once when his opponent died.

he beat a former vice president in 2002.

a guy who hadn't won a thing in 26 years

Listen, this really does go both ways.

The fact of the matter is that it was looking like Wellstone would beat Coleman anyway and then if you add in the sympathy vote, Coleman should have lost. Not to mention that his new opponent wasn't just a guy who hadn't won a thing in close to three decades but also a Minnesota legend. Of course, we Republicans can all thank Tom Harkin for helping us pick up the seat.

A Minnesota legend that just barely carried the state against an elderly conservative from California.

But he still won it despite a clear wave for a popular incumbent President.

According to Ed Rollins, they could have won Minnesota if they didn't have to divert resources to California because of Nancy's superstitions.

I remember hearing some other story about Reagan having to cancel the trip. Whatever the case, it would have still been close.
