Here's the scenario:

1) - Republicans do not shut down the federal government in 1995, staying pretty popular with the public.

2) - The GOP nominates a popular midwestern Governor - Tommy Thompson of Wisconsin and former Governor (and former Education Sec.) Lamar Alexander of Tennessee.

I think this is a fairly reasonable map...



Clinton - 312
Thompson - 226

Not to say I think Thompson would be guarenteed to lose. I think Ohio and Pennsylvania could swing his way.

Thompson makes all of the upper midwest very likely to switch to the Republican side.

Not sure about that. I still think states like Minnesota and Michigan would have a comfortable lean to Clinton. Possibly tossups though.
