New Republic wrote up a particularly scathing article about Boehner's ill-fated attempt to get a compromise bill through the House GOP.

When I heard that Boehner failed to get his own party to agree to his own compromise bill, I was struck by how far gone the GOP is (at least in the House).  This final blunder seems to be the icing on the cake for Democrats, making their narrative of the shutdown even stronger.

The resolution of the shutdown will not be a moment of both parties coming together (which could have redeemed to GOP in the public's eyes to some extent), but of the Republicans loudly falling apart at the seams.
