The GOP gets hit with a Tangentopoli-meets-Profumo-meets-Madge Oberholtzer-level scandal in 2023 and almost the entire field bows out. Johnson, who rejoined the GOP for personal reasons in 2022, is the last man standing and is intended to be a sacrificial lamb until a similarly thermonuclear scandal hits Biden late in the general election campaign.
