Spanish

2000 Census.  436 representatives, with DC included.

NJ 15; RI 1.

States with fewer than 0.7 representatives combined with neighbor.

ME, NH, VT with MA
DE with MD
WV with KY
ND, SD, MT and WY
AK with WA
HI with CA

CA, NV, AZ, NM, TX, FL, NJ, NY would gain representation.
CO, IL would stay equal.

Edit: if adjacent small states could gain representation, they were combined without a large neighbor.  In this case, the 4 northern Mountain and Plains states were combined independent of Idaho.

Is it possible to make a map for Irish Gaelic?

Does anyone even speak that in the US now? Maybe in 1875 people did, but now?

They barely speak it in Ireland.
Number 66 in the US.

Just behind Bulgarian and Hawaiian and ahead of Bantu and Kannada.

There are reported speakers in every state except North Dakota.

Interesting some of the less urban states with a small population.  This is one of the few language groups for which WV has its own representative.

NAVAJO! Oh, and Chamorro please. Shame Samoan ainīt listed.
I changed the listing standard to 40 or more states or 50,000 plus speakers.  So Samoan is included.  I suppose you'll also want Dakota, Cherokee and Hawaiian?

Vietnamese
States above average: HI, WA, OR, WA, KS, TX, LA, VA, MA
Interesting how Lousiana has so many Vietnamese speakers. I knew there were some, I just didn't think there were that many.
Originally a lot were set up as shrimpers.  Currently the largest concentration are (were) in the New Orleans area, both Orleans and Jefferson parishes, and in East Baton Rouge Parish.  There are high relative concentrations along the coast:

Plaquemines 1.9%
Vermillion      1.6%
Orleans         1.5%
Jefferson       1.5%
St.Mary          1.4%

In New Orleans there are census tracts on the West Bank that are more than 10% Vietnamese but the highest concentration is an area east of the city where there is one tract that is 46% Vietnamese.  I believe this is an area where the houses are built on stilts, because they are outside the levee system, but I don't think they were high enough.

Norwegian and Swedish, definitely.

Too bad Hmong or Somali aren't on the lists. I think I'd like those maps. Smiley
I've added Hmong and Cush**te (Somali and Oromo) to the list.  Most other languages with similar numbers of speakers were qualifying simply because they were spoken in more states.

How come so may Somalis and Hmong in Minnesota?
