If Cheney did have to be replaced, my strategic pick would be:

John Boehner - Representative from Ohio on his 7th term

Went to college in Ohio (Xavier University), as well as worked within state.  Currently he is Chairman of the "House Education and the Workforce Committee" and Vice-Chairman of the "House Committee on Agriculture," two committees which could help Bush continue to promote his domestic agendas.  Also carried his district by 70% in the last election.

That would be a poor move, since it would be seen as nothing but political.  Not to discredit Michael, but now would not be the right election for him.
