Or even later? I could certainly see a situation like this, where a long since retired VP comes back as a "elder statesman" VP. I could see a Democrat running on a platform that emphasised the environment picking Gore for that reason, and it might enough to entice Gore when he'd otherwise not be interested in re-entering politics.
