I really don't understand what's the big deal with Bushie. He seems like a decent person who just had a spell of bad luck in his life.
He makes odd and entertaining decisions and reasons for doing things - or rather
not doing things - throughout his adventures, which is difficult not to poke some friendly fun at. The real shunning comes from the wealthy hogs who resent him for his faith, trust in family and incompatibility (both personal and economical) with the university -> toil -> grave process.
