Considering the Democratic primary in Tennessee is not competative, my wife and I are trying to convince her family to vote for Boyd in order to prevent the crazy of Black, who she despises.

Given that you're a Democrat, wouldn't you WANT Black to win?  It'd be easier for Dean to win the general that way.

I can't imagine the odds being that different between Boyd and Black against Dean. Might as well try to keep the crazy out.
