Anderson took a lot of Reagan's vote away as he was a moderate conservative.  He made it close in some states than it would have been.

As for 1976, Muskie was popular in Maine and campaigned for Carter, and Ford was in Mississippi a lot that year.  Carter didn't campaign that much in the south because he thought he had it in the bag.

Kennedy had the Union support in 1960, and Humphrey did as well.
