Louisiana Eisenhower in 1956
New Mexico and Nevada Kennedy 1960
Michigan Kennedy
Connecticut and Maryland Humphrey
Washington Humphrey
Why was Maine so close in 1976?
Why was Mississippi so close in 1976?
Why was Delaware moderately close in 2004?

Anderson took a lot of Reagan's vote away as he was a moderate conservative.  He made it close in some states than it would have been.

As for 1976, Muskie was popular in Maine and campaigned for Carter, and Ford was in Mississippi a lot that year.  Carter didn't campaign that much in the south because he thought he had it in the bag.

Kennedy had the Union support in 1960, and Humphrey did as well.

New Mexico's large Hispanic Catholic population was probably excited about JFK.

As for Ford coming close in Mississippi, white Mississippians were so disillusioned with the national Democrats on civil rights, they were leery of any Democratic presidential candidate, even a Southerner like Carter.  Ford easily won Mississippi whites, but blacks overwhelmingly backed Carter, and Carter also obtained just enough white voters to carry the state.

Why did Barack Obama win North Dakota and why did Hillary win South Dakota in the 2008 Democratic presidential primaries? What is so different about those two states that caused such different results? I know North Dakota was a caucus and South Dakota was a primary. I know that Hillary performed better in the primaries and Obama won almost every caucus (save for Nevada). Any other explanations?

No, that caucus-primary thing is the correct answer.

Louisiana's usually been slightly less overwhelmingly partisan than the other Deep South states and Eisenhower was a fairly popular war hero candidate.

Suburban white liberal vote along with working-class Catholic support in the vote and black vote in the latter.

Lots of white liberals even before the era of Latte liberalism along with a strong labour tradition.

Plenty of Catholic voters in Maine.

The white vote had started to transition to the GOP and the blacks had just regained their access to the franchise.

Possibly socially conservative Catholic Democrats and moderate suburbanites voting for Bush on the basis of National Security and gay marriage?

Hillary basically ignored caucuses, which is why she lost all of them except Nevada. In addition, her campaign saw South Dakota as an absolute must-win to keep Obama from getting a majority of delegates and pushed hard on it near the end. She won the state, but of course that wasn't enough.
