Judging from the series Shtisel, there Haredim all seem to smoke tobacco like crazy. What is the religious justification behind tobacco = good; cannabis = bad???

Aside from the draft law, what policies do the Haredi parties stymie that causes so much fury from the secular parties?
No public transit on shabbat, no public construction works on shabbat (e.g. railway maintenance, which led to conflict in the previous coalition), power of the Chief Rabbinate/no civil marriage and secular people having to go through an entire process with rabbis if they want to marry within Israel, closed shops on shabbat, lots of spending on subsidies for religious schools... in combination with the general perception of low labour participation, not being drafted, having ultra conservative views on (for example) women, and segregating themselves from the rest of society.

Its amazing the garbage that these haredi parties impose on Israelis. Its like they want Israel to be some sort of Jewish version of Iran or Saudi Arabia.

Why can't there be a grand coalition for one term between Likud and Blue/White for no other reason that to exclude all the haredi parties from government, ditch all this religious claptrap from the Israeli law books and tell those freaks to go to hell???

Haredim and most right wing voters not only do not value Western democracy, but most actually outright mock it as sissified (and even goyish) liberalism that fails in a region where only brute force supposedly works.

More often than not it has been Jews in North America and Western Europe who have been leading figures behind the advent of liberal democracy

Any word on whether the actual numbers are confirming the exit polls?

Is there any country in the world that counts votes as slowly as Israel? If this were Canada every single vote would have been counted hours ago

Now that almost all the dust has settled it looks to me like the average of the three exit polls proved highly accurate.

For some reason I had this idea that Eilat would be a more
Left-leaning place since it’s widely regarded as a hedonistic “sin city” in Israel

A lot of the more "medium" sized places in Israel are likud/religious-right strongholds. This is because of other factors than their size, but it's a trend nonetheless.

I’m aware of that but I had this idea that Eilat was an exception because it’s sort of the Miami Beach of Israel. What religious nut would live in a place with so much mixed sunbathing?

I've been following this topic for awhile now and this is my first post in this topic. Obviously, I'm hoping this is finally the end of Netanyahu. However, my reason for posting here is to ask a question that I hope isn't stupid and one I've been wondering for awhile. What are the main differences between UTJ and Shas? Most of what I know about them is that they're both ultra-Orthodox socially conservatives who want to keep the Haredim out of the military.

Shas is Sephardic and UTJ is Ashkenazi

If Israel did head to new elections, 64% said their vote would not change, 11% said it would, and 11% said they wouldn’t vote.

So... thoughts?

Any data on how the people who say their vote would change in a new election would change?
