LBJ is technically eligible, but I can't imagine he'd be too interested in serving as a backup for Bobby. Probably Sanford, Al Gore Sr, or Ralph Yarborough though.

I wonder if George McGovern would also be a possibility (basing on McGovern endorsing RFK and running as effectively a stand-in after RFK was assassinated).

He doesn't really add anything to Bobby's base though...I could definitely see him playing a role in an RFK cabinet though

South Dakota is Midwestern

Sure, he's from the Midwest, but he doesn't appeal to Southerners, conservatives or moderates, and he would be seen as a radical.
