This is truly terrible. The most disturbing news I've heard in a long time. All those poor kids and teens.

Stoltenberg holds a "Terror will never be allowed to destroy our democracy" speech.

The Justice Minister tells people in the Oslo area to come out and help, and not to use mobile cell phones if not necessary. He also confirms that at least seven died in the bombing, and that one person has been arrested.

Hi, ive been roaming these forums for some time now, but i feel this is the time to write a post about these horrendous attacks.

Im active on the far left and know people in the youth wing of LO(The largest labour union in norway), one of whom saw and was shot at by the killer, but nobody i know directly have been injured.

This day has been a major shock for all us Norwegians, hitting right at the heart of our Democratic institutions at the governmental headquarters, and the tragedy at the Labour Youth camp where atleast 10 people have been killed.

Ive been on 2 summer camps on utøya and was planning to go this year as well, but now it has been cancelled.

If anyone have questions, just post them here, it's getting late here in Norway, so i'll answer them tomorrow or later depending on the circumstances.

Very sad that this would be the circumstances for your first post. Our thoughts are with you tonight.

Death toll has been raised to 80, damn.

Sad

Was that from the shooting or the bombing, or both.

The shooting

80 dead kids, I might just have to go and throw up somewhere

Gustaf/Swedish Cheese, what does this say? A Swedish church was damaged in Oslo?

http://www.svenskakyrkan.se/default.aspx?id=797489
Damaged in connection with the bombing yesterday, but it wasn't destroyed (as some media apparently have said)

What he said

The truth is that he probably would be dead soon after his release. My family is friendly with a professor in Criminology who once told me during a discustion that there is an irony with the short prison sentances in Nordic countries because a lot of the more brutal criminals rarely survive a year after their release. People often put out bounties on these people.

As for parliament raising the number of years a person can be imprisoned before his trail, that probably isn't too unlikly, however I believe the courts have to go after the statue that was in practice when the crime was committed, not when the trail takes place. (But I could be wrong on that)

What kind of sh**t justice system has neither life in prison nor the death penalty? Did no one ever realize that this might turn out to be a problem at some point in the future? Or did the Norwegian parliament just assume that no one would ever be murdered in their country?

In most European countries 'life' sentences aren't actually for life (my memory tells me that the usual life 'tariff' in Britain is fifteen years, for example). I think it's fairly unusual for it not to be possible to extend things to the literal meaning of the world, but most of the time that would just be a detail.

Right. A life sentence in Sweden is typically rather short. Tongue

However, in a case like this I suspect the penalty would be life or something very close to it.

A life sentance in Sweden is actually for life, but the goverment can (and always does) pardon the person convicted after a certain number of years. So in practice the max sentance is around 25 years. (But 97% is around 15-17 years)
