I'm pretty sure you could ask this of any failed primary candidate whose party lost the general, and they'd say yes.

Would Romney , Huckabee or most of the Republican candidates have thought they would have won in 2008

 I never heard any of them claim that, and I don't think anyone would have realistically believed that given the margin of Obama's substantial win that year.
