My thoughts on the Ohio Senate Debate

Timken: Mostly average, felt very robotic and used a lot of clearly scripted lines. Had one really good clap-back against Gibbons, but otherwise mediocre.

Mandel: Looked very awkward, came off as very partisan and aggressive (“I will fight” came up half a hundred times). Deflected questions about the debate disaster decently enough, but still not that great overall. His answer of whether he would support McConnell was a strange one, deflecting the question to attack the media, but otherwise pretty much what you would expect from Mandel. At least it could have been worse.

Gibbons: Stumbled a few times and wasn’t the most confident speaker, but had decent answers overall. Comes across as old and a little bumbly, but certainly better than Mandel or Timken. He had a few good lines, but the delivery really sucked and took the wind out of them (talking about his attacks on Mandel’s behavior and Vance’s prior never-trumpism).

Vance: Really solid, he seems to be the best speaker of the bunch, and he responded well to questions and attacks directed at him. He had quite a few landmines to deal with, like his statement on Ukraine and his apparent hypocrisy on calling for civility while bad-mouthing political figures, but he had an effective response for each one that deflated them. He had an attack from Dolan on the Ukraine issue that could’ve been a disaster for a lesser debater, but I think Vance handled it well. Also, his pivot on the 2020 election question to talking about big tech was very slick and an effective way to avoid rehashing that old issue while keeping the base happy.

Dolan: Solid, had coherent answers and a decent response to the inevitable “trump” question. Making it about results and not rhetoric was probably all he could do, but it wasn’t really the worst option all things considered. He was a decent public speaker, stumbled here and there but presented himself well, and of the bunch he may be the most presentable behind Vance tonight.

I would say Vance won tonight, although nobody really did spectacularly well or poorly.

Very smart ad. It won’t be enough for him to win this race, but he is running a very strong campaign for a red state democrat.
