This is an honest relief. Lord knows the Democrats need more younger voices in Congress, especially in the Senate

I’d nominate either Gilchrist, Stevens or even McMorrow. Just for the love of all that’s holy anybody that’s not named Rashida Tlaib. I actually want Democrats to win this thing.

And if it wasn’t for the fact he lost his primary I would say that Meijer is the GOP’s only chance at actually winning this seat.

Whitmer is also uninterested. Gilchrist is considering.

I like Pete. Always have. But if I’m being honest this is probably for the best.

If Gilchrist runs, he is obligated to fight John Fetterman for dominance as king of the giants.

My money’s on Fetterman in that case, dude looks like a human semi truck

Slotkin is the best choice IMO

She’s one of the strongest I’ll give her that, but that house seat is pretty vulnerable, given that she only won it by about 5 points last year.

Lmao what? She'll be in her 70s. no.

Why would she run? She’s somewhere in democratic minority leadership and is basically 70. Slotkin and Stevens make sense, but Dingell? Why would she even want to give up her house seat? If you want to leave the house, wouldn’t retiring be a better option?

Peter Welch is older than Dingell and he ran and won. Of course I don’t think she should run but it’s something to think about

Curious about who else in this Senate Class will retire.

It's a pretty old Class, even by Senate standards. Here's all the Senators up in 2024 who are the same age as Stabenow (72) or older:

Liz Warren (73)
Mazie Hirono (75)
Joe Manchin (75)
Mitt Romney (75)
Tom Carper (75)
Angus King (78)
Ben Cardin (79)
Bernie Sanders (81)
Dianne Feinstein (89)

And none of then have announced that they're retiring, yet.

Class 3 alone is the reason why we have the Oldest Senate in history

The funny thing about Class 3 now is that there's only a single Senator in that class that's older than 76 -- Chuck Grassley, at 89.

Class 3 has more Senators between the ages of 66-76; Class 1 has more over-75s.

Holy crap I put the wrong class on there. This is not my smartest moment

I'll rally behind Slotkin for the sake of unity, but if I was handpicking the nominee I'd go with Mallory McMorrow. I think she's a rising star in the Michigan Democratic Party and would be a fantastic face for its Congressional delegation. One way or another, I hope she gets a bigger role sooner rather than later.

She probably will, if the Democrats have any IQ points higher than that of a Clownfish she definitely would. What will most likely happen to her is that she runs for Steven’s house seat, and then goes for Peter’s seat whenever he retires.

Stevens is a NO

So should we just go ahead and assume Slotkin will be the nominee?

Im gonna go ahead and say congratulations to senator-elect Slotkin.

Because let's face it no potential Republican is strong enough to flip this seat and every other big name Democrat has declined.

If Trump wins Michigan, he will probably pull the Republican over the line. Still, I think Slotkin is favored for now.

Trump will not win Michigan. And there’s a realistic chance he loses the primary. (PS DeSantis won’t win it either).

Do you mean DeSantis won't win the primary, or he won't win Michigan in the general?

I think they were referring to a recent poll from the state that has DeSantis leading Trump in the primaries.

People are really underestimating the GOP in this race. I see Michigan as no better than a tossup for Democrats at the presidential level, and depending on the Republican candidate, they may be able to outrun the top of the ticket. Tossup, since it seems like presidential years are better for Republicans now than midterms.

I once opened up a dictionary to the word "doomer", and it had your avatar on there for some reason. Can't imagine why....

Yeah. Slotkin's not as progressive as some people might like, but she's not Sinema, and she's proven that she can appeal to swing voters. I'm okay with her being our nominee.

Try telling that to the guys on Twitter who believe that anybody slightly to the right of Bernie Sanders is a Republican

Endorsed if she actually runs. I like Slotkin, but I'd prefer somebody more progressive. And she sounds like she's exactly what I'm looking for.

What do you have against Slotkin?

It’s nothing against Slotkin personally, I’d just rather have someone a little more progressive than her, and Pugh seems to be the one

Slotkin was recently on the New York Times' Run-Up podcast and I was really impressed by her. She's not AOC but she's still a very mainstream Dem that doesn't seem problematic in any of her positions? I don't get what some Dems (especially on Election Twitter) have against her. She seems perfectly normal and what your average dem in a place like Michigan would be.

I mean I hate to say this as a progressive, but most people on Election Twitter I’ve followed seem to have a "If they aren’t 100% aligned with the Bernie/AOC crowd, they are a conservadem/Sinema 2.0" mindset. They seem to also have a new found beef for Josh Shapiro and occasionally Katie Porter and Adam Schiff for the same reasoning.

So apparently Raphael Warnock met with Harper a week ago made him more confident after calls from congressional leaders telling him to not run.

Slotkin update: this doesn't look good on her end

While I still don’t fully buy that "Sinema 2.0" garbage, this ain’t exactly making her appealing

Why is everyone in this thread so upset at the idea of people not wanting Slotkin? Like there's absolutely no reason for any progressive to vote for her. She's not owed the nomination just because the DSCC wants her.

I see it more as everyone getting tired of the near constant anti-Slotkin discourse being spoon-fed to us

Slotkin picketing with the UAW while Twitter is out making her look anti-Union is the most Twitter thing I’ve ever seen

That tweet is completely misinterpreting what Slotkin said - she was in complete support on CNN today as well. Part of election twitter continues to have slotkin derangement syndrome for some reason.

The discourse about that woman on there truly is awful. For the longest time that ProgFlip guy ran a bot account where anytime somebody would say the word "Slotkin" in any context, it would appear spouting garbage like "She's Sinema 2.0" or "She is a pro-life, anti-LGBTQ+ conservative".

It's getting to the point where I'm close to muting anything regarding her from my feed.

Board of education president Pugh out of this race, in on the open congressional seat.

I wonder if they do and endorsement for an endorsement deal
