Humphrey didnt even run in the prymaries in 1968.

Exactly. If he hadn't been the establishment candidate he wouldn't have won the nomination.

Also in reference to Harkin and Gephardt, neither were establishment candidates. Harkin was to the left of the mainstream Democratic party, and Gephardt (in 2004) never had the support of any establishment Democratic groups. Heck, big labor didn't even endorse him!
