Who were the 'establishment candidates' for each primary?

You can go back as far as you want, do R's and D's if you want.

I'll do a list later tonight, but Jeopardy is about to be on. Wink

McCain and Obama were both establishment candidates.

The only time non-establishment candidates won the primaries were perhaps the Republicans 1964 and Democrats 1972.

Of course the establishment got its revenge both times in the general.

Exactly. If he hadn't been the establishment candidate he wouldn't have won the nomination.

Also in reference to Harkin and Gephardt, neither were establishment candidates. Harkin was to the left of the mainstream Democratic party, and Gephardt (in 2004) never had the support of any establishment Democratic groups. Heck, big labor didn't even endorse him!

If Humphrey didn't run in the 1968 primaries then how did he become the Democratic nominee?

Is Harkin really that far to the left? I actually didn't mind Gephardt outside of economics.

If Humphrey didn't run in the 1968 primaries then how did he become the Democratic nominee?

Back then superdelgates were the majority of all delegates, and thus theoretically a candidate didn't have to run in the primaries if many superdelegates supported his bid for the nomination.

So screw the voters of our party. After all we're politicians and we know more than you? That's a great way to advocate democracy and freedom. So much for the popular vote.

Yes I know "To the Republic for which it stands." The left in our country seems to think we're a democracy and if you don't think they do just go to the public schools and ask our children what they're taught. Like I said so much for the popular vote... 2000

That's literally exactly what happened (Though Humphrey did run in some of the later primaries).  Had R. Kennedy not gotten shot, though, he very well could've garnered enough Establishment support to beat Humphrey at the convention.  Eugene McCarthy, who was, frankly, pretty s&&tty a the electioneering side of politics, was never going to upset the Establishment at the Convention.

Daley's cops beating the hell out of kids outside the Convention was horrendous from a PR standpoint and really undermined the Democratic Party for years.

I'm pretty sure Humphrey didn't run in any of them. The DC primary in 1960 was the only contested primary he ever won.

Which is why I'm Republican.
