I wonder if Betty Yee will run.

She could be a good temporary seat-holder if Feinstein doesn't make it through her term, although Newsom did promise to appoint a Black woman.

The benefit to Yee would be that it would not create a house vacancy in this narrowly divided house.

It was dumb for Newsom to box himself into picking a black woman after Padilla replaced Harris just like it was dumb for Biden to box himself into picking a black woman as his running mate in the first place. Democrats really gotta get over this diversity quota crap. Pick the best person for the job. It's almost insulting to black women actually to imply that couldn't possibly be them unless the job pool is narrowed down to only them. Of course, this all came out of the 2020-21 racial hysteria that does seem to have fortunately died down a little bit, but we still are living with the consequences.

Also now the idea, based on that stupid Tweet, apparently is that it's not good enough to pick a black woman as a placeholder, but they would ALSO cry if Newsom reneged and picked someone like Jerry Brown as a placeholder instead. God forbid Lee has to actually earn her seat. Anything but handing it to her on a silver platter is racism!
I agree. I thought it was a gaffe when Newsom said his next appointment would be a Black woman.

And he said it long before Diane Feinstein died.

If I were him, I would have said that I don't expect an appointment to open up and dodged the question.

LA Times compiled a list of names Newsom might appoint.

They are:
  • Angela Glover Blackwell
  • Lateefah Simon
  • Mayor London Breed
  • Secretary Shirley Weber
  • Laphonza Butler
  • Controller Malia Cohen
  • Judge Leondra Kruger (who was under consideration for Biden for SCOTUS)

Not interested in an appointment are:
  • Mayor Karen Bass
  • Supervisor Holly Mitchell
  • Congresswoman Maxine Waters
  • Oprah Winfrey

I don't know if Newsom likes Shirley Weber anymore. He sued her during the recall election for not having his party listed on the ballot, if I'm not mistaking

It also doesn't seem like Breed is interested, and she also is against the idea of a caretaker.

Keep an eye on Angela Glover Blackwell. She's old enough to where she might not mind being a caretaker.

It's going to have to be an older person, that will be a caretaker. No young ambitious person wants to be a senator for one year and not be able to use that incumbency to run again.

If it is Lee, I wonder if Schiff or Porter drop out.

With Dave Min having legal troubles from his DUI, and no real frontrunner down there, maybe Porter suspends her campaign, endorses Lee, and runs for re-election in her swing district.

Schiff could do the same or continue to run against Lee.

It's possible that they turn their attention to 2026 statewide elections, like the open Governors mansion or AG (should Bonta decide to run for Governor).
